Notably, Hua was selected as one of the finalists for Season 21 Grand Jury Awards by Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, OH (2024). Born and raised in Suzhou, China, Hua traveled from China to the US in 2017 to attend The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, where he double-majored in studio art and biology, along with a minor in philosophy, and received a Bachelor of Science degree. Currently, he is a second-year MFA Fine Art candidate at School of Visual Arts in New York.
Ruoxi Hua is an artist whose current work consists of a series of paintings on wood panels, focusing on disregarded places in urban environments. Inspired by his experience of living by himself for almost seven years in a foreign country, he became intrigued by the concept of “non-places,” places where people remain anonymous, not belonging, and therefore estranged. These places are common and necessary to function in society: side streets, alleyways, public bathrooms, subway stations, parking lots, grocery stores, etc. However, as he passes through them routinely every day, it becomes clearer to him that these spaces are built for maximal function and minimal aesthetics. They are used for efficient transportation, efficient consumption, and even efficient excretion. Carefully observing and analyzing these spaces gives him the feeling as if he is trapped in a maze, both in time and space—everywhere looks identical and indifferent, as if there may be no escape. The spaces he encounters often feel devoid of personality, defined by their sheer mundaneness.
