Zengyuan Ma

Zengyuan Ma (b. 2000, China) is a New York-based multidisciplinary artist and current MFA candidate at the School of Visual Arts (class of '26), formerly of Goldsmiths, University of London. Her practice spans installation, painting, and drawing, exploring themes of fractured memory, personal identity, and the, sometimes unsettling, intersection of the human body with nature and domestic environments. “Escaping from the embedded expectation of females” acts as a continuing theme. In paintings, Ma expresses her love and rebellion towards her mother and the female figure she represents, conducting a spiritual matricide and moving toward independence as the woman she chooses to be.
